A short but interesting story of life by gaslight in Goldenhill.
David Wood’s article this time goes by him saying that Goldenhill village still had gas lamps for street lighting until the early 60s.
The chap who was responsible for the maintenance of the lamps used to ride around on his bike with a ladder over his shoulder.
Before my time but not too long before, when people didn’t have alarm clocks, a man was employed to walk the streets first thing in the morning and wake people up for work by knocking on the bedroom windows with a pole.
Believe it or not, he was called the knocker upper, but I always wondered who knocked up, the knocker upper?
