Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association has been in contact with a company based in Cheshire who have agreed to restore the Stonier Memorial Gate outside Goldenhill Community Centre.
Work started on refurbishing the gate on Wednesday (09.11.22) by D&N Shotblasting who are doing the restoration for free, although the residents association has spoken to the council who have agreed to pay £150 to purchase special hardwearing paint.
The history behind the gate is that the Stonier bus company erected it in 1918 after a young boy from St John’s School got killed by a bus when running out onto the High Street, and the gate was put there to try and stop any such accident/fatality happening again. When the school closed it was then decided to move it to it’s final resting place outside the community centre.
