The Co-op Bank proposes to close its Tunstall branch blaming the move on a ‘continued change in how customers choose to bank’.
Our reason for opposing the Tunstall closure is as follows.
- Residents in Stoke on Trent North are reliant on having a branch nearby, especially when there is an ageing community who are in many cases unable to travel further afield to access services
- An ageing population means that customers are not always I.T. literate, and losing a valuable asset such as their bank to walk into can cause untoward stress to many of your supportive members
- Stoke on Trent is a linear city unlike other cities across the UK, which means travel to another location is exasperated for many of its customers/members
- The Tunstall Co-op Branch is a hub of activity with its friendly staff who are always on hand to help, which is a service that most other banks fail to offer today
- When the Co-op Bank recently suffered financial difficulties, its customers/membership stood by the financial institution in it’s time of crisis and now it is believed the favour should be returned
Customers/Members of the bank are devastated at the decision the Co-op has made to close the Tunstall branch, and are hopeful that you will reconsider your choice to leave it open for your many members who have regularly supported the Co-op and previously the Britannia.
Remember, you already have a supportive and loyal membership, and this is something that most other banks don’t have, so please look at your decision again, it is important for everyone concerned.
The news of two co-operative banks closing on the 1st June in Tunstall & Kidsgrove is devistating news for many people who live in the north of the city.
Residents many who are elderly and live in Goldenhill depend on the Co-op Bank, formerly Britannia Building Society to access their money transactions.
The former Britannia Building Society, locally based in Leek has been recognised for it’s mutuality, which continued when it became the co-op Bank, and has always had strong support from it’s many local residents.
Residents have been reporting that they feel very let down by the news today, especially when witnessing how busy the Tunstall Branch still is, and in some cases customers cannot always travel to Hanley to do their business.
Residents and the residents association are hopeful that the Co-op Bank will reconsider their decision to at least leave one branch open in the north of the city.

Sandyford McDonald’s as well as all 14 LEMACA Franchise restaurants are raising money to provide a defibrillator for each store. This is something LEMACA have asked as a requirement for all stores to help save lives and give something back to the community.
In every McDonalds all Mangers are first aid trained and have been shown how to use these devices, although they are self-explanatory when they are used. When a defibrillator is used and effective CPR is performed within 3-5 minutes of cardiac arrest, survival chance increase from 6% to 74%.
£850 is what is needed to order a Defib and the store currently has £350 rasied. If anyone would like to donate money to this worthwhile cause then please contact McDonalds on 01782 821863 or contact the Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association website.
