Goldenhill “When David Was a Lad”

Let me see if I can give you a general idea of what it was like in the village of Goldenhill in the 1940s and 50s, or as the saying goes, when I was a lad.

Goldenhill Train Station in the 1950's

There was a maze of streets and back alleys, perfectly designed for young lads to explore and create mischief in. Within minutes you could be out of those streets and into green fields kicking a ball for all you were worth.

It was in the 1960s when everything changed with the city council embarking on a massive slum clearance programme.

The village stands 700 feet above sea level and has commanding views over the city and the Cheshire Plain. There are records of people living in the area as long ago as 1640.

Redevelopment – Old Church School

Paul Squire from Landstone Homes (Birmingham) attended the Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association Committee Meeting earlier in the month in regards to the redevelopment of the old Church School on Goldenhill’s High Street.

Paul Squire said, the site is losing money and that is why he is asking S.A.G.E. & Councillor Martin Garner to give their input in respect to its further development.

Mr Squire reported that the site has planning permission for six flats to be built and he is looking at renewing it.

It was reported at the meeting that U.K. Banks are not being supportive in regards to property investment, although the Indian Banking network are being more helpful with financial backing.

Councillor Garner and the S.A.G.E. committee supported the idea to have new flats built on the site and agreed that it would hopefully resolve the problem of antisocial behaviour in the area.

Landstone Homes have also agreed to honour a previous agreement with S.A.G.E.  to build a community room on site, subject to the rebuild so that Community Payback Workers are able to use the facility for toilet, eating and storage when maintaining the Churchyard and other community working.

What are your thoughts on the proposed redevelopment and community working in the area?

Property Damage in Heathside Lane

Staffordshire Police are following reports of windows being damaged by missiles being thrown or catapulted in Heathside Lane, Goldenhill. This is happening during the early evening as it gets dark.

Police Officers attended the area to reassure residents and give advice to those who have suffered damage or had concerns and to carry out enquiries.

Uniformed and plain clothed officers patrolled the area to identify offenders and reassure residents.

Local schools were visited and staff and pupils informed to discourage and pass the message on to any offenders known to them.

Enquiries are ongoing and the area will continue to be patrolled regularly.

Anyone who witnesses any suspicious behaviour is encouraged to report it on 101.

Falling Congregation Forces a Goldenhill Church to Close

St John’s Church on the village High Street in Goldenhill is to close due to a dwindling congregation.

St John's Church, High Street, Goldenhill

The Anglican Church towers above the Potteries at Stoke on Trent’s highest point and at a public meeting last week it was agreed that it is impossible to keep the building going as a church.

Visitors and local residents who attended the meeting were saddened by the proposed closure of a church that has been used for Christian Worship for almost 200 years..

Some positives did come from the meeting when the Archdeacon of Stoke upon Trent The Venerable Godfrey Stone said, a Christian Church of South Korea were showing some interest of moving into the Midlands and that Goldenhill could be a possible base for the Church.

At the Public Meeting called by the Diocese of Lichfield, it was said that they would use the S.A.G.E. website to keep local residents updated along with further consultation to the church building closure.
