Nearest Knife Amnesty Bank – Police Relaunch Ditch The Blade Campaign

Staffordshire Police relaunch Ditch the Blade campaign this Autumn, you’re likely to see increased coverage about knife crime in the press and on social media over the coming weeks.

Working with local partners, we are urging young people to go knife free and to reach out for help and advice if they’re feeling trapped or pressured to carry a knife, or are carrying a knife out of fear.

The myths and reality surrounding knives are very different. A common misconception is that it’s common for young people to carry knives, when the reality is that 99% of young people aged 10 to 29 don’t carry a knife.

Although it’s rare for young people to carry a knife, it’s still important to chat to the young people in your life about the topic and discuss any concerns or worries, as they may not always understand the risks and consequences.

A couple of myths about knives are:

Carrying a knife will keep you safer. You only get a criminal record if you actually use the knife.

Unfortunately, the reality is: Carrying a knife puts you in more harm as it could be used against you if a situation gets out of control. Anyone found carrying a knife risks a criminal record if they are found in possession – this applies whether there is an intent to use the knife or not.

You can find advice to start a conversation, and details for support organisations here: https://www.staffordshire.police.uk/ditchtheblade

Knife banks for the anonymous disposal of knives

There is a growing network of knife banks to enable the safe anonymous disposal of knives across the county.

Some banks are supplied by ourselves, and others are supplied by partners. You can check where your nearest location is by viewing the map on our website: https://www.staffordshire.police.uk/ditchtheblade

If you do not have a knife amnesty bank nearby you can also take a knife to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre (Tip) for disposal.

If you’re dropping off a knife please make sure it’s suitably wrapped and secure for your journey.

Residents Frustrated by Vehicles Driving Over Broken Manhole Cover with a 2025 Repair Date

Residents are fed up of continuing clanging of a manhole cover at the junction of Shelford Road/High Street, Sandyford near to McDonald’s.

At times as many as 1,000 vehicles pass over the manhole cover, which consists of repeated noise pollution that residents class as a form of Chinese Water Torture.

Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association have been in contact with Severn Trent Water who are responsible for the repair, and have said they will be contacting Highways tomorrow 05.11.24 to request a permit to implement a two way traffic light and road closure to do the work.

Severn Trent Water have said they have to give 15 weeks notice to repair the manhole, which means the work would take place around the second week in February 2025. Severn Trent did say they understand the inconvenience this is causing nearby residents and have stressed they will try to get the repair done much sooner.

Councillor Chandra Kanneganti and Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association are both jointly speaking to Council Highways to try and speed up the permit approval so Severn Trent can get the repair done as quickly as possible.

Using Fireworks Irresponsibly

Everyone should be able to enjoy fireworks safely, whether at an organised display or in their back garden. Here you’ll find out the law around using fireworks as well as how to stay safe, and report those using fireworks in a dangerous or threatening way.

Fireworks and the law.

  • What time can fireworks be used?

Fireworks can be used in the UK any time from 7am to 11pm.

Exceptions are:

  • Bonfire night: 7am to midnight
  • New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year: 7am to 1am the following day

Who can use fireworks?

  • it’s an offence to throw or set off any firework (including sparklers and category 1 fireworks) in or into any highway, street, thoroughfare or public space

What is the impact of firework misuse?

Used irresponsibly, fireworks can cause damage to property and do significant harm to people and animals. Not only is there a danger from fireworks exploding, they can also pose a serious fire risk as well.

This is why members of the public may only use fireworks on private property, such as their back gardens, and only licensed professionals can use them in public places.

What you can do

If a local retailer is selling adult fireworks to people under 18, please report it to your local Trading Standards.

If children are setting off fireworks in your area, our first advice is to ask them politely to stop. It’s possible they’re unaware that they are breaking the law. If you know their parents, perhaps ask them to intervene.  If you’re having an ongoing problem with people setting off fireworks, please report antisocial behaviour to the police.

Fireworks and the Law

Did you know…….

Staffordshire Police say that there is a law around when it is acceptable to use fireworks in the UK.

Fireworks can only be used between a certain time of the day with only a few exceptions, Bonfire night is one of those where they can be used between 7am – midnight.
