The Young at Heart project in North Staffordshire yesterday launched a new project aimed at men who want to do something that will put their skills and experience to good use.
The new community allotment scheme will grow vegetables for local community projects and Young at Heart’s own social groups. They are appealing for men aged 55 or over to come and help out.
Rob Kellett, men’s outreach worker, was down at the allotment to kick-off the new scheme. Speaking beforehand, he said, “We’ve got a good plot, we’ve had some soil delivered and we’re going to start by digging it over ready to grow produce. There’s a communal area where we can get teas and coffees, have a sandwich, or shelter out of this rain! I’m here in my overalls and wellies ready to pitch in – come and join me. We’ll be here every Wednesday from 12:30 to 2:30 at Trubshawe Cross Allotments, Mott Place in Middleport.”
