Unveiling Goldenhill’s Great War Memorial Gate

Great War Memorial Gate Before Restoration

Pictured above before it’s restoration is the First World War Memorial Gate outside Goldenhill Community Centre, which was in urgent need of refurbishment due to it’s many years of neglect and deterioration.

Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association thought it was about time they stepped in to preserve this piece of history in Goldenhill.

D&N Shotblasting of Cheshire offered to restore the memorial gate for free, along with making sure the plaque was more noticeable for everyone to be aware of it’s history.

The history behind the gate being erected was to celebrate as depicted on the gate “Presented by W. Stonier on Cessation of Hostilities of The Great War 1918” who at the time were the operators of Stonier’s Bus Company. It was also confirmed by local resident Sheila Simmonds that the gate was placed in front of St John’s Infant School to protect young children from running directly onto Goldenhill High Street, which we are sure saved many a young child’s life.

This Tuesday at 10.00 a.m. outside Goldenhill Community Centre (20.12.22), Councillor Chandra Kanneganti and James Smith, Vice Chairman of Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association have agreed to do the unveiling ceremony to celebrate the restoration of the memorial gate.

Everyone is welcome to attend on the day to witness the good work that D&N Shotblasting has done to preserve a memorial which was erected to celebrate the end of hostilities in 1918.
