Community Police Engagement (Sandyford/Goldenhill)

A meeting took place at Hanley Police Station on Friday 7th March in regards to reviewing policing concerns raised by Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association (SAGE).

Our thanks go to David Williams M.P. for arranging the meeting on behalf of the residents association, where the M.P. Councillor Chandra Kanneganti, SAGE Residents Association and Senior Police Officials were in attendance.

Staffordshire Police confirmed there would not be a named police constable for the area as requested by SAGE, but it was agreed to look at alternatives to fill the void.

Positives from the meeting proved encouraging, which discussed a neighbourhood engagement programme between the police and the community that should increase police visibility within the area, with a review meeting date to follow.

Do you know a young person who’s hoping to start driving lessons soon

Do you know a young person who’s hoping to start their driving lessons soon?

The Helping New Drivers website from the Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership (SSRP) has a range of advice and information for anyone helping someone learn to drive.

The website covers topics from choosing a driving instructor and private practice, through to driving on rural roads and in challenging weather conditions. Guides for parents, carers and others offer step-by-step advice to help take the stress out of accompanying learner drivers.

The website also features a range of downloadable materials on topics to discuss before a young driver takes to the road, including managing speed, avoiding distractions and the importance of wearing seatbelts.

Remembering Lost Loved Ones

When seeing a robin with its colourful red breast, it can appear to many of us as another treasured bird in the U.K, but there is more to the bird in old wives tales, which many people believe.

The saying goes “when robins appear, loved ones are near” reflects the belief that robins serve as messengers from the afterlife.

In Irish and Celtic culture, robins are seen as a sign that someone important is nearby, and that lost loved ones may be visiting.

Whether the saying is true or not is a thought when meeting up with a robin, and for us to pause and think of a lost love one who we deeply miss.

Free Skip Day Proves to be a Big Success

Community skips in the Goldenhill & Sandyford areas have taken place today to provide residents with a facility to dispose of bulky items locally.

The skips have been allocated out of Councillor Kanneganti’s Ward budget, and supported by Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association (SAGE).

The councillor and residents association believe this is a good spend of money to help residents who are unable to get to the local recycling centres.

The three skips were located at Broadfield Road opposite McDonald’s, Garbett Street/High Street opposite St John’s Church and next to the Chatterley Whitfield Pub (Brindley Village).

Pictured above from the SAGE Committee is Tom Simpson & James Smith (Left) & (Right) Tom Simpson, Philip Isaacs & Lester Fern. Our thanks also go to Anna Beck, Hazel Goring & Julie Cooper (SAGE Committee) who today on Goldenhill High Street/village green supported more residents to dispose of unwanted bulky items.

Protect Yourself From Holiday Fraud

People looking to snap up online holiday deals ahead of the summer are being warned to stay extra alert and do their research before booking their getaways, as new data reveals victims lost a total of over £11 million to holiday fraud last year.

Action Fraud, the national fraud and cybercrime reporting service, has launched a holiday fraud campaign, urging the public who are looking to snap up their next holiday deals online to look out for suspiciously enticing offers online, including on social media, and do their research before booking their getaways.

New data shows there were 6,066 reports of holiday fraud made to Action Fraud last year, with July recorded as the highest month of reporting with 647 reports.

Holiday makers lost a combined total of £11,183,957 in 2024, which is comparatively less than the £12.3 million lost in 2023. Despite, the drop in reported loss, the average loss per victim remains at similar levels, with £1,851 the average in 2023 and £1,844 in 2024.

What can you do to protect yourself from holiday fraud? Check the travel company is legitimate: about to book a holiday? Do some research first to check that the company is legitimate, especially if you haven’t used them before. Use consumer websites, or reviews from people (or organisations) that you trust.Look for the logos: look for the ABTA, ABTOT or ATOL logos on the company’s website. If you’re unsure, you can use the links below to verify membership:

Use a credit card to pay: use a credit card for payments (if you have one). Many of these protect online purchases as part of the Consumer Credit Act.Only provide required details at checkout: when making your payment, only fill in the mandatory details (often marked with an asterisk) such as your address. Unless you think you’ll become a regular customer, don’t create an account for the store.Keep your accounts secure: create a strong and unique password for your email. If 2-step verification is available, always enable it.Watch out for suspicious links: whether it’s in an email or social media post, be wary of promotions for unbelievably good holiday offers. If you receive a suspicious email, report it by forwarding it to: report@phishing.gov.uk

Stoke on Trent North M.P. David Williams yesterday in Parliament was addressing the ongoing issue of “Off Road Bikes” across the area, including Sandyford & Goldenhill.

The M.P. raised the important problem directly with the Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, adding that this is a key issue that plagues our communities, and the Government is committed to sorting it out.

2030 Petrol & Diesel Car Ban

The Government made a fresh announcement on the petrol and diesel car ban in January this year. It’s committed to no new petrol and diesel cars being sold by 2030, and by 2035 all new cars and vans will need to be 100% zero emissions. This is good news for the UK becoming a zero emissions country, but the ban is just 5 years away, and drivers are concerned about charging infrastructure and the cost of electric vehicles.

Are electric vehicles the right way moving forward for our country?

National Random Acts of Kindness Day, Monday 17th February

National Random Acts of Kindness Day is observed every year on 17th February. It is observed in the United States, New Zealand, and other countries to encourage and celebrate selfless acts of kindness through small and thoughtful acts.

National Random Acts of Kindness Day was first celebrated in New Zealand in 2004 and later gained popularity in the United States and worldwide. The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation (RAK), founded in 1995, promotes this day to encourage selfless acts. The concept of random kindness has roots in the “pay it forward” movement, inspiring people to help others without expecting anything in return.
