Stoke on Trent City Council have approved plans today for Network Space to have new units built in Sandyford.
The new units will be built at its Tunstall Arrow site on the north side of James Brindley Way; where the company say the development will bring much needed business to the city and provide new employment for the Stoke on Trent area.
Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association and a resident from the Brindley Village Estate put their cases forward at today’s meeting in an attempt to compromise the developments visual impact where residential and business come together.
The residents association supports the application by Network Space in regards to the new development; creating additional business to Sandyford and Stoke on Trent as a whole, and bring additional employment to the area which is much needed, although the residents association did say it has reservations that Network Space takes into account and supports the area with the following recommendations.
It is reported that nearby properties are 32 metres away, and it is recommended that sufficient treeline/hedge screening is provided with mature foliage & NOT as in many cases where saplings are planted, which can take many years to grow and serve their purpose. The developer confirmed that mature planting of trees and hedgerow would now take place.
Cladding where applicable, similar to that of Blue Planet/JCB at Chatterley Valley that is tapered shades of green would also soften/mask the view to residents who live near to the buildings, which includes Russell Road properties as well as those on Brindley Village. The developer explained the reasons to why this was not suitable as in vandalism etc. but after pressure was presented, including councillor support then Network Space agreed to look into the situation further.
Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association would also like to have confirmation to who would be maintaining the green space foliage so the area is kept clean and presentable at all times. This was confirmed would happen by the developer through a contract company taking charge of the work.
The resident representing Brindley Village said that the largest of the buildings, which is also the tallest is the one nearest to nearby properties, which means, it would have been better to have replaced it with one of the smaller units and asked for this to be taken into consideration. The developer went into great lengths to explain that mine shafts are in the area and there layout meant this was not possible, and to make the units viable needed them to be of a certain size.
It was reported that almost £45,000 will be donated through the development due to loss of biodiversity in the area, and the residents association, along with the resident representing Brindley Village is requesting it is used in Sandyford & Goldenhill to put something back in the area, especially since it has lost so much greenspace due to extensive house building and business development. Stoke on Trent City Council Planning Team as well as the City Councillors stressed the need that the biodiversity money should be spent within the Sandyford/Goldenhill area. The residents association recommended that hedgerow and trees would strike a balance, but would like to be involved/consulted before any decisions are made to their planting and location.
Noise pollution was also an issue brought up by councillors at the meeting, and stressed that this needs to be addressed with considerate care to residents by putting in measures to reduce any such disruption. Network Space confirmed that any such works taking place would be carefully looked into, and where possible the effect to keep the noise down would be addressed.
The resident representing Brindley Village, along with Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association understand that progress to move the Sandyford area along with the rest of Stoke on Trent is important to all of us as a city, but as much consideration as possible is needed to ensure that business and the community are able to live in harmony with each other whilst moving Stoke on Trent forward to a better city which we all want.
In the early hours of Sunday 6th June in Wilson Way, Goldenhill at approximately 03:00 a car was damaged and the same house had its windows put through by an unknown offender. The offender’s then made off in a vehicle out of the Cul-De-Sac.
If anyone has any information regarding this incident then please call Staffordshire Police on 101, crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or private message on Facebook/Twitter quoting serial number SP-20210606-0098.
Staffordshire Police would like to thank you for any help you can provide with this incident.

Sandyford Says goodbye to Mary Bennett who was a former school teacher, and a previous Secretary of Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association (SAGE) who sadly passed away on Thursday 27th May.
Mary who was a school teacher at Hollywall Lane, which is now the newly named Star Academy taught many children in the Sandyford & Goldenhill area as well as being the first secretary of SAGE when it was formed back in 1999.
Mary was well known for her caring attitude towards looking after the environment, whether it was keeping the area clean and tidy to encouraging green space growth.
Family, friends and neighbours will sadly miss the lady who has given so much to the community that she cared for over her many years of being a Sandyford resident.
Whilst volunteers supervised car parking facilities at Goldenhill Medical Centre yesterday due to people receiving their covid vaccination, they were surprised to receive free cans of pop from a resident who lives in Elgood Lane, Goldenhill.
The resident said he was so appreciative of the work the volunteers were doing in the blazing sun, and thought it would be a good gesture to show his gratitude for their involvement supporting the local community.
Sandyford and Goldenhill Residents Association who arrange additional volunteers to help out at these sessions believe it is a good opportunity to show support in these difficult times we are now living in.
What was more surprising to the car park volunteers is that on occasion they do receive a back lash from drivers who do not appreciate being requested to park their vehicles in alternative safe locations, and are of the opinion they can leave their vehicle exactly where they want, which makes receiving an unexpected piece of kindness that extra bit special.

The self-driving technology – known as Automated Lane Keeping Systems (ALKS) – aims to make driving safer and easier. But insurance experts are expressing concerns.
In April, the government announced that cars with self-driving technology could be on our roads later this year.
The self-driving systems it’s referring to are Automated Lane Keeping Systems or ALKS. These are automated systems that can take control of a vehicle at low speeds.
The Association of British Insurers and Thatcham Research have questioned the government’s decision. They say that the systems aren’t fully self-driving, but only assist drivers.
This could put drivers as risk, as when an ALKS is enabled drivers might assume that the vehicle is fully in control of itself.
ALKS are designed to make driving safer and easier, but are UK roads ready for them. If it were to happen then would Stoke on Trent roads be in a position to accommodate this new technology?
 Former Goldenhill Golf Course
The City Council has confirmed that suggestions of the former golf course at Goldenhill could be sold off to business is untrue. The local authority says that the land is unsuitable for building redevelopment, and it is in the middle of a green belt area so it is very unlikely it can be used for such a proposal.
Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association has now been advised that the former golf course is to remain in council ownership, and they are looking at having football pitches at the location as well as considering other options to further recreational activity in the north of the city.
