 Ridge Road, Sandyford
It is nice to throw a light on how street names came to be, and on this occasion it is the Sandyford Estate behind McDonald’s.
A gentleman named Mr Wignall (Wignall Road) was a builder who built the majority of the estate, and he had two daughters, one named Maureen (Maureen Avenue) and another named Sandra (Sandy Road). It is not known how Ridge Road got it’s name, but it is believed it is because it is on a slight ridge, hence the name.
A gentleman named Russell Bates was the builder who built the houses in Russell Road and Russell Place hence their names.
Unfortunately, there is no history to tell us how Whalley Drive and Henshall Place got their names, so if anyone out there knows how, then please let us know.

St John’s Church in Goldenhill has been placed on the property market to be sold by “rightmove” estate agents.
The property is a Grade 2 listed disused church building constructed around 1840.
Residents have always had concerns in regards to what will happen to the church. Previous suggestions were that the building was going to be taken over by another Christian Faith, along with other rumours that it was going to be used as a warehouse.
St John’s Church, which can be seen for miles across Stoke on Trent, and many parts of Staffordshire is a recognised focal point, and residents would want to make sure the building is maintained to sustain it’s long term future.
Steve Bourne, Technical Director (Muller Property Group) at a recent SAGE public meeting, talked about developing the old Salt & Riley builders yard land opposite KFC in Sandyford (pictured right).
Mr Bourne said that retail parties are now showing an interest in the site, and current proposals are for a coffee drive through, convenience store, and a retail unit. Mr Bourne added that planning/traffic surveys have been actioned, although no planning application has yet been submitted.
Councillor Joy Garner who attended the meeting mentioned concerns of the site entrance coming out at a busy junction, and have they considered having another one.
In response to Councillor Garner, Steve Bourne explained that access and egress at the location would be on both sides of the site.
Ruth Smeeth M.P. who was an invited guest to the meeting asked what guarantees are there that local businesses will be involved in developing the site. Mr Bourne responded by saying, they will promote local involvement to develop the site wherever possible.
Comments from some of the residents was that it is good to hear there will be more jobs for the area, although others shared concerns of additional traffic issues being brought to the area.
Muller who are proposing to develop the land said; in comparison to the larger scale of things already taking place that it would not make any significant impact to the traffic situation.

Churchill China have reported making record profits last year, which has increased more than £2 million to over £53 million pounds.
This is good news for the Sandyford based company as well as giving an added boost to the economy of Stoke on Trent.
Churchill China have also pledged to reinvest around £1 million pounds from it’s land sale in Fenton to it’s headquarters in Sandyford. The company say that the investment will go towards capacity, capability and efficiency improvements at the site, which employs around 650 staff.

Councillor Martin Garner has made a contribution of £500.00 out of his ward budget to support the provision of a defibrillator at McDonald’s Restaurant in Sandyford .
The councillor say’s the contribution will not fund the full cost of the defibrillator, but the remainder will be raised by McDonald’s staff and volunteers through other activities.
The provision of a defibrillator will enable public access to an important piece of equipment which can save lives, and it is a known fact that CPR and defibrillation can double a person’s chances of surviving a cardiac arrest.
Residents have raised concerns to where the defibrillator would be located, especially if it was outside the restaurant as in possible vandalism.
When recently discussed at the Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association Committee Meeting, it was suggested that the defibrillator should be outside in respect to access e.g. when McDonald’s is closed.
The procedure for use of a defibrillator is that you would telephone 999, and then the call centre will notify where the box is located, with a code, which in turn would help to keep the equipment safer from vandalism.
Main sewer repair work is to start on Monday 12th March 2018 in Ridge Road, Sandyford. The road will be closed during these works for approximately 5 days.
Severn Trent Water anticipate the works to be finished earlier than this period, and should this change then residents will be kept updated on the progress.
Due to an obstruction in the sewer pipe the water authority are having to carry out excavation to remove the obstruction to restore full water flow, and to prevent sewer flooding the highway and/or properties.
During the road closure there will be a small diversion in place via Wignall Road, Maureen Avenue and Sandy Road (and reverse of).
There is a contact tel no should you wish to speak to the contractor, which is Jamie Clewes, “Marlies” on 07720682711.
