Douglas Macmillan Hospice launches its volunteer recruitment campaign

Whatever you can do, do it for Dougie Mac

Douglas Macmillan Hospice is ever growing the services that it provides for patients and their families in Stoke on Trent and North Staffordshire. A vital part of offering these services is the support it receives from its team of wonderful volunteers.

Today this community of volunteers are involved in every aspect of the day to day running of the Hospice from patient care in the hospice itself and in the community; helping within the Income Generation department by volunteering at Fundraising events, working in our 19 retail shops; to various administration roles across the Hospice.

The Hospice recognises that all volunteers are individuals and have very different motivations, personal circumstances and availability and we match the opportunities we have at the hospice considering these along with their skills, quite simply –“ Whatever you can do, do it for the Dougie Mac.”

Interested in volunteering then please visit www.dmhospice.org.uk/volunteer , email workforceservices@dmhospice.org.uk or call our team on 01782 344332

Anne Street Potholes in Desperate Need of Repair

The residents association has been asking the City Council for the past 2 years to address the issue of repairing road potholes in Anne Street, Goldenhill.

The area is next to Goldenhill Medical Centre and Co-op Pharmacy, and it has been identified that not only is it bad for motorists to drive over, but also dangerous for pedestrians who have to walk across the road/car park to visit the amenities.

The main problem to having the road surface repaired has been who is responsible at the council to have the work done. It appears the land comes under council housing, but road surfaces come under Highways.

The good news is that Councillor Martin Garner has taken the issue up for S.A.G.E. and has passed it onto the Cabinet Member who can address the problem. There is still no date to when the work is to be carried out, but we are sure someone from the council can inform us very soon of when it will take place.

Plans for Goldenhill Workingmens Club to be Demolished

An outline planning application to demolish Goldenhill Workingmens Club, and to redevelop the site with 26 houses, 14 x 2 bedrooms and 12 x 3 bedrooms, plus a smaller club house has been forwarded to to the City Council Planning Department.

Concerns S.A.G.E. has raised, along with Councillor Martin Garner is in respect to vehicle parking at the site. Other issues the residents association has in respect to the proposed development is the close proximity of houses being built next to a social club.

House Fire in Shelford Road

Local fire station where the appliance engine attended from

On Sunday afternoon, 07.09.14 a fire started behind a fence at a property in Shelford Road, Sandyford.

The time of the fire was approximately 1.50 p.m. and within minutes the fire spread to a nearby shed and then onto a flat roof at the rear of the property.

Once the alarm was raised, Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service attended the scene, and within minutes the fire was put out.

It was said the family dog was in the property on it’s own at the time of the fire, but fortunately the animal was with it’s owners.

The property at the centre of the incident is next door to the Mace Shop at the junction of High Street/Shelford Road, and because of vehicles stopping on double yellow lines as well as on the no waiting kerb marking restriction zones, it proved difficult for the fire engine to attend the incident sooner.

To date it is not known how the fire started at the Shelford Road property.

Anyone with any information regarding this incident is asked to contact the police on 101, quoting “Incident 271 of 5th September 2014”

Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Public Meeting

A “Fun Day” was had by all

S.A.G.E. residents association held it’s Annual Goldenhill Community “Fun Day” on Saturday 9th August.

Joan Walley M.P. opened the event by announcing this would be her final year representing constituents in the north of the city. The M.P. said how proud and privileged she was to have been asked to do the honours again, since opening the first event back in 2007.

Tom Simpson, Secretary, S.A.G.E. thanked Joan on behalf of residents for caring and looking after her constituents in Stoke North whilst being their M.P.

The day yet again proved to be a success whilst providing many activities, including Paul Warwick’s Fair, food, stalls, dancers and much much more to mention.

This day highlights how important it is to bring the community together, especially when having the very young to those who are a little bit older.

The weather again proved to be on our side with loads of sunshine, but unfortunately Councillor Martin Garner and Jason Owen, S.A.G.E. Committee Member had to settle for the wet stuff, due to them raising funds by appearing in the wet sponge stocks.

Thank you everyone for attending the event and supporting S.A.G.E.

Eager Beavers

Eager Beavers along with Goldenhill & Tunstall Scouts and Cubs came to Albany Street, Goldenhill to support elderly residents to spruce up their properties.

On the day Scout Leaders Julie Jones, Tony Porter and other volunteers, helped to supervise the event by cleaning outside the bungalows, as well as doing a much needed litter pick in Albany and Perkins Street.

Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association Members Anna Beck & Tom Simpson also gave support to the project by ensuring residents were aware of the event, provided water for cleaning, and oversaw refreshments were provided for everyone who worked so hard on the day.

Everyone who was involved with the event, including residents who live in the street said, what an exciting opportunity this has been for young and old people to come together, and enjoy a worthwhile occasion for the community.

Well done Beavers, Scouts and Cubs, you have done us proud!
