Easter Comes Early to Goldenhill Primary School

Pictured Joshua Bryan with one of the baby chick's resting on his head

Children at Goldenhill Primary Shcool are playing Mother to six baby chick’s after they were hatched in their classroom.

The children have been responsible for feeding and watering their feathered friends along with a guinea fowl, which has recently been born at the school.

Teacher Gail Williams said the children have been using the baby chick theme to inspire their learning as in painting and writing letters to the chicks mother.

The Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association have said they believe this is a great project for children to learn from and are very proud of the pupils, teacher and school for contributing to such an educating idea.

Children’s School Trips Out by David Wood

Sunday school and ordinary school trips were a definate treat for us. The Sunday school trip was once an excursion to Drayton Manor Park near Tamworth. It may be a thriving amusement park now but back then it was what it said on the label, a park.

Morecambe Beach in 1952

We had parks back at home, Bathpool, Tunstall, Burslem, Clough Hall & Hanley, why did we have to travel all that way to see a park with grass the same as our own.

School trips were a little more adventurous. At Church school, less than 11 years old and at six o’clock in the morning we trudged all the way down to Goldenhill station and boarded a train on the Loop Line, which then proceeded to travel towards Stoke. We sat in a siding for about 2 hours until there was a gap for us to enter the main line; fair enough we then hurtled towards the Lake District as fast as the steam train would go.

We boarded a bus, saw Lake Windermere and got back on the bus to the train station, next stop was either Morcambe or Southport, we tarried there for an or so, saw the sand and Promenade and then back to Stoke. I think we were back at Goldenhill station around 8 o’clock in the evening having spent our few shillings on I don’t know what.

While at Church school we were taken on a day trip to Stratford upon Avon, we saw the theatre and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and the memorial to William Shakespeare in the church; the only problem was, we hadn’t got a clue who the man was, we were only about 10 years old, perhaps it was a little bit too soon to be thrusting culture upon us. That particular day was the first time I had worn long trousers, up to then I had always worn shorts; I had begged & pleaded with my mum to buy me the trousers and to let me wear them for the trip, I had never felt so uncomfortable in all my life as I felt that day. We went in a cafe in Union Street in Stratford for lunch and I sat with my trouser legs rolled up to the knees, the silly thing was I was the only boy there dressed like that, all the others still had their short trousers on. We enjoyed our day and the memories are still there.

David, what a nice story to read about past times for the children of Goldenhill and Sandyford, just in time to plan day trips for our children in 2014.

Lights go out on Planning Application

A planning application to install four floodlights and a canopy to an existing portacabin at Goldenhill Working Mens Club has been withdrawn by the applicant.

The Working Mens Club car park where a car wash facility operates has been an issue with local people for some time, residents say the recent application has only added to their ongoing concerns.

Residents recent opposition to the application along with support from Councillor Martin Garner was in one particular area of having unacceptable light pollution intruding inside their properties.

Residents Fear Light Pollution

An application has been submitted by Goldenhill Working Men’s Club to have a canopy and four floodlights installed to a portacabin on the car park, where a car wash facility operates.

It has been reported that local residents who live nearby on Kidsgrove Road, Goldenhill are concerned by the application in regards to light pollution.

A resident who lives in Kidsgrove Road said “I am not wanting to look at a canopy or to have additional lighting shining through the windows at night.”

Residents who have been in contact with Councillor Martin Garner have received his support by him opposing the planning application on the grounds of unacceptable light pollution.

Volunteer Help is Needed for “Fun Day”

Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association “S.A.G.E.” is looking to recruit new members.

At present S.A.G.E. has 13 members but unfortunately when it holds events such as the Goldenhill Community Fun Day, it finds itself short on member participation.

To hold events such as the “Fun Day” is very enjoyable and rewarding and that is why we need to recruit new people to help out on such wonderful occasions.

If anyone would like to join S.A.G.E. and get involved in making Sandyford & Goldenhill a better place to live in then contact us through the website and leave your details; we look forward to hearing from you soon.

Goldenhill Medical Centre Hits New Heights

It has been reported this week in The Sentinel that Goldenhill Medical Centre came 3rd out of 100 practices, which were ranked in order of whether patients would recommend them to people looking for a new G.P.

The Goldenhill Practice operated by Dr Chandra Kanneganti and Partners has always been a popular medical centre with its patients, and to come so high up the table with survey results, can only confirm the trust everyone has with the team who operate there.
