Goldenhill Community Fun Day Reaches New Heights

This year the Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association (S.A.G.E.) has reached new heights with its Community Fun Day, which is to be held on Saturday 3rd August.

27ft High Climbing wall

To make the day better than ever, it has decided to book a 27 ft high climbing wall, which has been hired for the day from the City Council’s Stanley Head Outdoor Education Centre.

It is believed that the attraction will bring in more people to the event, especially teenagers and adults who are wanting to get a bit more excitement when visiting on the day.

S.A.G.E. has been told that the City Council’s wall is probably the highest one to climb in all of Staffordshire so come on the day and give it try.

Goldenhill Digs Hard to keep it’s Mining Past

It was reported at the Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Public Meeting last week that it wanted to celebrate Goldenhill’s mining past.

It was suggested by the S.A.G.E. committee at it’s meeting that it was looking at having a sculpture put up in the area that would depict Goldenhill as it was for many year’s a coal mining community.

Members of the committee are looking at approaching a local college or University to see if they would like to start the ball rolling as in students taking on the idea as a local project.

Goldenhill’s mining past goes back some hundred’s of year’s and the S.A.G.E. committee believe that by celebrating it’s history would help put the village back on the map for what it contributed to local industry.

To speak to the residents association direct, use the contact tab at the top of the page; we would welcome support from anyone.

Sandyford is a Hot Spot for Grass Fires

It has been reported in the Sentinel that Firefighters have been called out to dozens of grass fires across North Staffordshire in the last fortnight.

Numbers show that there has been 130 grass fires reported across the area during the school Easter Holidays.

Sandyford tops the list with 39 reports of grass fires during the recent two-week period.

Other areas across the city have suffered similar grass fire incidents including Newcastle with 36, Hanley with 19, Stoke 10, Longton 7, & Kidsgrove 4.

It was further reported in the Sentinel that North Staffordshire saw the highest number of grass fires in the country, which saw 172 reported during the Easter holiday in total, up from 146 last year.

Tom Simpson, Secretary of Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association, admitted he was surprised at the figures.

He said: “It is quite a high number”. But the thing about the Sandyford and Goldenhill area is there is a lot of green open space, which is easily accessible to people.

“That might be one of the reasons why the number of incidents has been so high.”

Tom Simpson further added “I did see a few police officers patrolling green areas off James Brindley Way during the Easter holidays, so it’s comforting knowing something is being done to try and prevent this.”

Play Area Comes Back to Life!

An army of 60 LoveStoke volunteers brought the sunshine to Goldenhill, as they gave a tired looking play area in Rodgers Street a whole new lease of life!

The weather was fantastic and the attitude and endeavour of all the volunteers more than matched this, volunteers scraped and painted and litter picked their way to transforming this area of the city!

Love Stoke went onto thank:

  • Stoke on Trent City Council for nominating the project & supplying some of the materials
  • Local Labour City Councillor Martin Garner for Goldenhill & Sandyford his support & also helping to fund some of the materials
  • Goldenhill & Tunstall Scouts for providing refreshments & hot dogs at the event, really appreciated!
  • Goldenhill Working Men’s Club who kindly agreed to let them use a section of their car park, and their toilet facilities during the project
  • Matt Burke from www.mytunstall.co.uk & Tom Simpson from Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents’ Association (SAGE) for helping to publicise the event
  • BBC Radio Stoke for interviewing in the morning prior to the event
  • The Sentinel for covering the event and a very positive article!

Massive thanks went to all of the amazing volunteers who gave up their Saturday to make a difference; they created a great atmosphere and ultimately finished the project to an excellent standard! The play area looks so much better and has already been noticed by the local community … give yourselves a pat on the back, very well done!!

Thanks again go to everyone involved in making it happen. They genuinely couldn’t have done it without you!

Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Public Meeting

Play Area to get a Revamp

On Saturday 6th April in Goldenhill, starting at 10am, LoveStoke are hosting a project to paint the play area off Rodgers Street, nominated by Stoke-on-Trent City Council who have also provided some of the materials.

The paint is flaking off everywhere and the play area is barely usable in its current state, so this will be of great benefit to the local families in the area!

We have received a great response from volunteers including from the local community and now have over 50 signed up! Goldenhill & Tunstall Scouts are supporting the event and will also be providing refreshments on the day, whilst Martin Garner, Labour City Councillor for Goldenhill & Sandyford Ward, has also volunteered his painting skills and some financial support for materials.

We are really looking forward to partnering with those in the local area in achieving this transformation; it will be great fun and everyone involved will have a real sense of achievement when this facility has a new lease of life!

What a Mess!

Litter dropping and fly tipping have been reported in the Hollywall Lane area of Sandyford.

At the S.A.G.E. committee meeting, which was held earlier in the week it was said that there is litter spreading from the farm at the top of the lane to Chatterley Road at the bottom.

It was also reported at the meeting that there is asbestos piping, which has been fly tipped at the side of the lane, which gives the area a poor and unkempt look.

The Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association along with Councillor Martin Garner has arranged for an officer from the council who deals with environmental crime issues to attend the S.A.G.E. Public Annual General Meeting, which is to be held next month.

This would be a good time for residents to come along to the meeting so they can get their point across to try and stop this antisocial activity.

Suspicious Cold Calling

On the evening of the 4th March in the Burnaby Road area of Sandyford there has been a male knocking on addresses requesting to buy old unwanted gold.

The male has been reported as being very intimidating and evasive. Please do not allow anyone into your property for any reason. If you have any concerns call Staffordshire Police immediately.

The male is described as white, in his late 30’s with short ginger coloured hair brushed forward, stocky build, clean shaven wearing a dark blue jacket and jeans.

Anyone with information can call Staffordshire police on 101 quoting incident number 630 of the 4th March or call anonymously on Crime Stoppers 0800555111.

Council Housing Services Satisfaction Survey

Stoke on Trent City Council has asked BMG Research to conduct a postal survey among council tenants.

The surveys will be sent to a random sample of 2,500 households from February 2013.

If tenants complete a survey they will be entered into a prize draw to win £50 in Potteries Centre vouchers.

This is a chance for residents to tell the council what they think about council housing services so that improvements to services can be made.

Questions are asked around housing and services; contact with the landlord; communication and information; antisocial behaviour and repairs and maintenance.

If customers would like to talk to anyone at BMG about the survey, please call the free helpline on 0800 358 0337. The helpline is staffed during office hours and has an out-of-hours answerphone service that is checked regularly.
