Village Life by Gaslight

Street lighting powered by gas

A short but interesting story of life by gaslight in Goldenhill.

David Wood’s article this time goes by him saying that Goldenhill village still had gas lamps for street lighting until the early 60s.

The chap who was responsible for the maintenance of the lamps used to ride around on his bike with a ladder over his shoulder.

The Knocker Upper

Before my time but not too long before, when people didn’t have alarm clocks, a man was employed to walk the streets first thing in the morning and wake people up for work by knocking on the bedroom windows with a pole.

Believe it or not, he was called the knocker upper, but I always wondered who knocked up, the knocker upper?

If you have memories from anything mentioned in this story then please post a response on the website.

Ex S.A.G.E. Treasurer Passes Away Aged 79

It is sad news to report that Les Carter of Burnaby Road, Sandyford passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning, 30th September.

Les who was the Treasurer of the Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association for 10 years held the position until he retired from the post in March 2010.

Les was a very thoughtful and caring member of his community and he always wanted what was best for the people who he represented.

S.A.G.E. and the residents of Sandyford and Goldenhill would like to send their deepest sympathy to his wife Jean and the rest of his very close family.

1960’s Minimum Wage & Pastimes

David Wood this time talks about the hourly rate of pay in 1960’s Goldenhill when it was a minimum wage. David continues with his story by also saying what the young people used to do to pass the time away when getting bored.

David’s story starts by him saying, Let me go back a little, when I was a paper boy my pocket money was eleven shillings for about twelve hours work over the five days from Monday to Saturday.

When I started to work my pay was two pounds and thirteen shillings, for this I went out of the house at 7-15 am and came back in at 5-15 pm.

In total, I was out of the house for 50 hours and my pocket money was only ten shillings per week, a shilling worse off and I thought I was better at Maths than my mum was.

There wasn’t a lot of spare money to be spent on toys but we never seemed to be at a loss for things to do.

On the odd occasion that we might actually be bored, we would kick a tin can around the streets, it not only gave us healthy exercise it also annoyed the life out of the grownups, just a little mischief, nothing malicious.

Another annoying pastime was to wedge either a lollipop stick or a folded cigarette packet into the spokes on your bike and pretend it was a motor bike with the noise it produced.

Until next time you can read more of David’s yesteryear stories by clicking on the local memories tab at the top of the page.

City Council’s Chief Executive Visits Goldenhill

Elgood Lane community car park, Goldenhill

John van de Laarschot, Stoke on Trent City Council Chief Executive visited Goldenhill on Wednesday 12.09.12 for a short visit where he met with Councillor Martin Garner, the Local Matters Team & Joe Smith & Tom Simpson from the Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association.

The meeting took place at the community car park on Elgood Lane where they discussed the state of the ground at the car park since it has been partially tarmacked by the Highways Dep’t when resurfacing the road.

The Chief Executive agreed that the car park does look a mess from the High Street and agreed to try and address the problem by speaking to the relevant people.

Land where the Lord Nelson Public House once stood

S.A.G.E. believe that by the Highways Dep’t part tarmacking the ground for free has done a favour in regards to possibly getting the contractor back to finish off the work they started.

Mr van de Laarschot was also updated on employment opportunities for local people by Heathside House offering new jobs at the Home, and he was shown where the Nelson Public House used to be and the derelict school next to the church in respect to ideas and suggestions from him on how to improve the area.

It appeared that Mr van de Laarschot was impressed with the positive vibes that he heard from everyone who met with him on his visit to Goldenhill & Sandyford.

Gypsies Move onto Sandyford Fire Station

It was reported that a family of gypsies have moved onto Sandyford Fire Station at around 6.00 p.m. tonight.

The family who entered the fire station’s land at the rear of the building moved on with a campervan, car and caravan.

It was said that the vehicles moved further into the car park by setting up base near to the Wicke’s building lower down the site. One of the reasons for this action is believed to be that more gypsies’ families could be making their way to the fire station site.

Further reports say that a police vehicle has already visited the site and witnessed the aforementioned actions taking place.

Success Story for Sandyford’s Churchill China

Churchill China unveiled a 22% rise in half-year profits this year and this is very good news for the Sandyford tableware manufacturer.

Churchill China Rabbit Money Gift Box

The Sentinel reported that the company posted pre-tax profits of £841,000 for the six months to the end of June, up from £689,000 during the same period last year.

Mr Roper, Chief Executive at Churchill China reported that employee numbers have remained steady over the past six months and employs around 520 people at its Marlborough Pottery headquarters based in Sandyford. Sandyford and Goldenhill Residents Association (S.A.G.E.) believe that this is good news for the area, especially in these uncertain economic times.
