Community skips in the Goldenhill & Sandyford areas have taken place today to provide residents with a facility to dispose of bulky items locally. The skips have been allocated out of Councillor Kanneganti’s Ward budget, and supported by Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association (SAGE). The councillor and residents association believe this is a good spend of money to help residents who are unable to get to the local recycling centres. The three skips were located at Broadfield Road opposite McDonald’s, Garbett Street/High Street opposite St John’s Church and next to the Chatterley Whitfield Pub (Brindley Village). Pictured above from the SAGE Committee is Tom Simpson & James Smith (Left) & (Right) Tom Simpson, Philip Isaacs & Lester Fern. Our thanks also go to Anna Beck, Hazel Goring & Julie Cooper (SAGE Committee) who today on Goldenhill High Street/village green supported more residents to dispose of unwanted bulky items. People looking to snap up online holiday deals ahead of the summer are being warned to stay extra alert and do their research before booking their getaways, as new data reveals victims lost a total of over £11 million to holiday fraud last year. Action Fraud, the national fraud and cybercrime reporting service, has launched a holiday fraud campaign, urging the public who are looking to snap up their next holiday deals online to look out for suspiciously enticing offers online, including on social media, and do their research before booking their getaways. New data shows there were 6,066 reports of holiday fraud made to Action Fraud last year, with July recorded as the highest month of reporting with 647 reports. Holiday makers lost a combined total of £11,183,957 in 2024, which is comparatively less than the £12.3 million lost in 2023. Despite, the drop in reported loss, the average loss per victim remains at similar levels, with £1,851 the average in 2023 and £1,844 in 2024. What can you do to protect yourself from holiday fraud? Check the travel company is legitimate: about to book a holiday? Do some research first to check that the company is legitimate, especially if you haven’t used them before. If 2-step verification is available, always enable it.Watch out for suspicious links: whether it’s in an email or social media post, be wary of promotions for unbelievably good holiday offers. Stoke on Trent North M.P. David Williams yesterday in Parliament was addressing the ongoing issue of “Off Road Bikes” across the area, including Sandyford & Goldenhill. The M.P. raised the important problem directly with the Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, adding that this is a key issue that plagues our communities, and the Government is committed to sorting it out. The Government made a fresh announcement on the petrol and diesel car ban in January this year. It’s committed to no new petrol and diesel cars being sold by 2030, and by 2035 all new cars and vans will need to be 100% zero emissions. This is good news for the UK becoming a zero emissions country, but the ban is just 5 years away, and drivers are concerned about charging infrastructure and the cost of electric vehicles. Are electric vehicles the right way moving forward for our country? National Random Acts of Kindness Day is observed every year on 17th February. It is observed in the United States, New Zealand, and other countries to encourage and celebrate selfless acts of kindness through small and thoughtful acts. National Random Acts of Kindness Day was first celebrated in New Zealand in 2004 and later gained popularity in the United States and worldwide. The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation (RAK), founded in 1995, promotes this day to encourage selfless acts. The concept of random kindness has roots in the “pay it forward” movement, inspiring people to help others without expecting anything in return. Quality Over Quantity – Focus on the quality of the flowers rather than the number. Fresh, well-selected roses can make a more significant impact than a larger quantity of less impressive ones. Personal Touch – Accompany the roses with a handwritten note or a small, thoughtful gift to add a personal touch. Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association wishing everyone a special “Valentines Day” to remember. A council tax increase of £19 per annum across Police and Fire & Rescue has been confirmed by the Police, Fire & Crime Panel. At meetings taking place on 3rd and 10th February, the Panel approved the following increases: 5.12% increase for Police & Crime (an extra £14 per year for a band D property) 5.8% increase for Fire & Rescue (an extra £5 per year for a band D property) Staffordshire Commissioner for Police, Fire & Rescue and Crime Ben Adams said: “I know from my council tax consultation that residents want their services to keep improving, to further increase officer numbers and to evolve so they can address local priorities such as vehicle crime, rural crime and ASB, and work with other agencies to keep people safe. Regrettably, next year, central government grants will not cover increases in pay, national insurance and inflation – cutting total funding in cash terms. “I am acutely aware that household budgets are tight. Nevertheless, to protect the progress both services have made, limit the impact on service levels and to continue to prepare for an uncertain future, I need to increase the council tax precepts for both services by the maximum allowable. “Together, they should put Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire Fire & Rescue in the best possible position to continue to keep us safe.” |
