The government is considering changing the frequency of MOT tests from yearly to every other year.
There are changes for new vehicles too. Currently, new vehicles need to get an MOT after 3 years. But in the future, new vehicles might not need an MOT for 4 years.
The MOT changes apply to cars, motorbikes and vans.
The government says that the changes to MOTs reflect the improvements to vehicle safety, for example automatic lane keeping systems (ALKs).
This might cause some safety concerns for motorists. But government analysis revealed that new vehicles usually pass their MOT in the first 3 years. And that there are low numbers of casualties in collisions in the UK due to vehicle defects.
It’s standard practice to test new vehicles at 4 years in countries like:
- Belgium
- Denmark
- France
- Italy
- Spain
- Portugal
Most drivers will likely be happy that they could save money with less frequent MOTs. The average MOT costs £40, so the new changes could save motorists across the UK £100 million a year.
But it’s important to make sure you’re still getting regular services and not ignoring problems with your vehicle. This should also mean you have less problems when you do get an MOT.

The Kay Group who are developing a new BP Service Station on James Brindley Way near to the KFC roundabout have asked Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association to update residents with a progress report.
They say they only have one legal document to secure for the entrances and exit they need to start the development, which all conditions have been discharged.
The Kay Group say they will be on site this week to do some setting up and some services diversions, but it is not the start of the development, purely preparatory work.
Today Tom Simpson on behalf of Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association and Councillor Chandra Kanneganti met up with Councillor Carl Edwards, Cabinet Member for the Environment and Ass’t Director Carol Gibbs to discuss the ongoing percentage issue for tree purchase/plant against a 30 year maintenance programme.
Originally the council said a 2/3 maintenance programme was required where Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association said a 50/50 split was a more realistic approach.
It is good to report that Jon Rouse, Council Director confirmed his support to a new percentage split of 50% to purchase/plant trees and the remaining 50% to maintain them over a 30 year period to which the residents association agreed. It was also reported that tree planting will be taking place before the end of March 2023.
The residents association would like to take this opportunity of thanking the aforementioned officers for their support in the matter, along with Councillor Kanneganti, and also Jonathan Gullis and his team for arranging meetings and pressuring the council to look at the situation again.
