Remembering Les Burrows Who Sadly Passed Away on Boxing Day

It is really sad to report that Les Burrows who recently lived in Burnaby Road, Sandyford for over 30 years has passed away in hospital on Boxing Day.

Les was a proactive member on the Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association (S.A.G.E.) and was elected onto the committee in April 2015 before retiring in March 2020 to go and live in a bungalow in Fegg Hayes.

Les proudly held the position of Environment Officer on the residents committee where he championed many worthwhile causes such has trying to prevent antisocial fly tipping to arranging to have signage erected on Hollywall Lane to stop HGV’s causing chaos on a road that was only suitable for cars.

Les will be sadly missed by his wife Angela who was a dinner lady at Hollywall School for 25 years, his two children and many friends, but also by anyone who knew him to be a caring individual to that what he believed was right in whichever community he lived in.

Pictures in Sandyford & Tunstall show a wintery scene with plenty of snow for everyone to enjoy, not only the children but also the adults as well.

Footpath directional sign on James Brindley Way

It’s nice to see the north of the city looking so picturesque in these times of isolation due to the coronavirus epidemic. Lets hope that next year is as white and bright as the pictures shown on the website.

New Signage to Stop Traffic Chaos at McDonald’s from Monday

McDonald’s is to install new traffic signage from Monday at it’s Sandyford restaurant to help manage vehicle congestion in the area.

Since the coronavirus epidemic changed the way people purchase food, it has proved more difficult for stores such has McDonald’s to deal with customers when the only way to buy food is through using their drive thru facility.

McDonald’s senior management have been looking at alternative ways of how to improve a faster turnaround of customers, which includes them implementing new signage at it’s store.

Parcel Delivery Scams “Beware”

Staffordshire Police have been advised that criminals are sending out phishing (fraud) emails, purportedly from well-known delivery companies, which claim they’ve been unable to deliver parcels, packages or large letters. These emails may ask the recipient to pay a fee or provide additional details in order to rearrange delivery.

There’s also an increased risk of scam phone calls and texts impersonating delivery companies, as well as fake delivery notices posted through letterboxes. Similarly, these will ask for advance payment or for customers to provide information that is later used to defraud them.

Scam emails will encourage you to click on links to seemingly genuine websites, where you’ll be requested to provide personal and financial information such as your address, date of birth, mobile number or bank details – they use these details to commit fraud. In some cases, victims later receive a call from the criminal pretending to be from their bank’s fraud team, trying to persuade them to move their money to a safe account or reveal their pass codes.

Frosty Weather Causing Vehicles To Be Stolen

Staffordshire Police are warning motorists to be aware that a number of vehicle thefts have recently taken place due to people leaving their cars unattended whilst running with the keys in to defrost them.

If you fall victim then you may not be covered by your car insurance. As well as this, most people also have their house keys attached to their car key which would also mean having the locks changed on your property!

Please try and use other methods to defrost your car, including the good old fashioned car window scraper.

Traffic Chaos (McDonald’s, Sandyford)

Councillor Chandra Kanneganti and Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association have been addressing concerns in regards to traffic chaos caused by McDonald’s drive through facility within Sandyford High Street.

Council Highways have been looking into possible ways to alleviate the traffic situation, but unfortunately suggestions to close access to the restaurant north bound would only add to further congestion southbound when vehicles would need to do a “U Turn” further up the road.

McDonalds Area Manager reported that she has arranged to have new signage implemented at the restaurant, which informs vehicles of a “Left Turn Only on Exit” (pictured), and are hoping that this can help with the flow of traffic.

Statistics provided by the McDonald’s Franchise shows that the Sandyford Restaurant has the fastest turn around through all of it’s drive thru’s, including it being in the top 20% across the country, which is showing their commitment to trying to improve the situation. Management at the store are still committed to see where possible if the drive thru can be speeded up in any way to help further improve traffic flow.

Highways Response to Road Improvements, (McDonald’s, Sandyford)

Council Highways have responded to calls for road improvements at McDonald’s (Sandyford) by Councillor Chandra Kanneganti and Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association in regards to traffic chaos caused by the restaurant’s drive through facility.

The Highways Department has responded as follows.

I can appreciate the concerns and issues raised by the residents. I have noted that the McDonalds, Tunstall site already has in place a dedicated right turning lane from the High Street, and unfortunately there is no way of extending that dedicated turning lane to cater for more vehicles due to the need to have right turning lane into Hollywall Lane and also the location of the existing pedestrian crossing would be problematic.

I must point out that there are similar issues being experienced at other Mcdonald’s Franchises throughout the City, especially in Norton, Meir Park and Trent Vale whereby queuing traffic from the Drive Thru’s are encroaching onto the Highway Network. The reason for this is purely down to the current Covid-19 restrictions that are in place meaning more Drive Thru transactions are now been conducted, as patrons are unable to either eat within the restaurants and/or prefer to collect food via their own vehicle rather than enter a restaurant premises to allay their own covid safety concerns. In addition to this Mcdonalds have reduced the amount of staff on site in line with national guidance, which will have a knock on effect on the lengths of queues and volumes using the Drive Thru.

The traffic management that is in place within the McDonald’s Site is purely down to their management but as you can appreciate the High Street franchise does not have an expansive car park like other McDonald’s throughout the City and extending the drive Thru queues within the extents of their site would prove very difficult. Unfortunately at this moment in time, there is no highway law that the City Council can enforce on McDonalds to alleviate the vehicular queuing on the highway network. But there is legislation currently being drafted by Central Government Office which will provide us with more powers in the future.

If there is any dangerous manoeuvres being carried out by vehicles on the High Street itself these would need to be reported to the local police unit in the first instance so they can assess the manoeuvres and take the appropriate action where possible.

We will continue to monitor the situation, but in conclusion, it would appear that customer habits and staffing levels within Mcdonalds have changed somewhat in line with Government advice and due to this it as had a knock on effect on the Traffic Management Issues around some McDonalds facilities. As relaxations to the covid-19 restrictions are brought into operation over the next few months it will hopefully reduce the need for patrons to queue to utilise the Drive Thru facility and traffic movements and volume will return to more normality as it was pre-covid restrictions.

Christmas Gift Scams on Social Media

Searching for a Christmas bargain on social media? Keep your eyes open for deals/prices that seem “too good to be true”.

Staffordshire Police are advising that criminals may advertise low prices for popular items that are sold out everywhere else to trick you into parting with your money. Often, the goods advertised don’t exist, with images taken from genuine sellers to convince you otherwise.

Before making any purchases, read online reviews to check the seller is genuine.
Paying by bank transfer provides you with less protection, so it’s important that you use a secure method when making payments. Consider paying by credit card for purchases over £100.

Antisocial Activity, Your Help is Needed?

Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association has made the police aware of regular vandalism/littering under the public footpath bridge near to James Brindley Way.

The location is after Victoria Park Road roundabout and goes onto James Brindley Way (South) and at the traffic light crossing you go onto the public footpath and then to the location under the bridge.

Council staff clean the area about 3 times a week and soon after that the littering, broken bottles etc. reappear. Today it has also been noticed a fire was started over the weekend at the location.

This type of antisocial activity shows no consideration for people or even those who are walking their dogs through times when broken glass is on the floor. Suggestions being made are that possible covid rules by the people who are causing the antisocial activity are not being observed by the actions they are taking.

If anyone knows who may be responsible for these unacceptable actions then please report it to the police on 101, crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or contact the residents association website www.sandyfordgoldenhill.co.uk e-mail where your comments will be passed onto the police privately.
