Young Offenders & McDonald’s Bring “Happy Feel” To Community

Overview of completed work

Young Offenders, McDonald’s & Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association (S.A.G.E.) have worked together to bring to an end an eyesore that was unpopular with local residents who live in the Shelford Road area of Sandyford.

Young offenders and the staffing team were asked by S.A.G.E. to do copious amounts of groundwork to remove shrubbery and weeds that were growing out of control and making the area look a mess.

Close up of completed work

After many weeks of hard working, McDonald’s promptly arranged to have the plot turfed with grass, which was completed at the weekend.

This has been a project where residents, business and young offenders have all come together to better the area we live in, and well done to everyone concerned, especially giving a big thank you to the young people and staff from the youth offending service for making this happen.

Lorry Repeatedly Rams House Front

Police in Stoke-on-Trent have launched an investigation after a house was damaged in a targeted attack in the early hours on Thursday morning. Residents in Broadfield Rd, Sandyford were awoken by noise of a stolen lorry being used to repeatedly ram into a house on the street at around 1:35 am this morning (5 November 2015). Witnesses and CCTV coverage says the stolen vehicle repeatedly rammed into the property before making off. A number of vehicles in the street were also damaged.

The stolen lorry was found within a few minutes in Cotton Road and a forensic examination of the lorry and the house will take place this morning. It is believed that those involved made off in other vehicles immediately after the incident and none of the occupants of the house have reported any injury. Chief Inspector Adrian Roberts, Commander of the Stoke North Local Policing Team said “This was a very targeted attack, we believe the house and it’s occupants were specifically targeted as part of an ongoing dispute. Sadly this isn’t the first type of incident in this area and a detailed investigation is now underway. I urge anyone with information to speak to the police or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. My local policing team will be conducting highly visible patrols in the area to speak to local residents.”

Anyone with information is urged to call Staffordshire Police on 101 quoting incident 34 of 5th November.

Young Offenders Help Improve a Community Eyesore

Site cleared with a big part of the job completed

Young offenders are giving something back to the community in a project to remove an eyesore for Sandyford residents.

For a long time pictured right has been an area on Sandyford High Street adjoining McDonald’s, which has been allowed to vegetate weeds as well as out of control shrubbery that residents wanted removed.

Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Association contacted the “Youth Offending Service” to ask if they could help to make the area good, which they did.

On Saturday mornings and afternoons the team has been working hard to improve the look of the area, and once completed McDonald’s have agreed to have the area turfed with grass as well as new fencing to match the rest of the site.

A big thank you to the Youth Offending Team, keep up the good work.

5p Charge for Carrier Bags as of Monday 5th October

As you may have heard, the government is introducing a new law that requires retailers in England to charge a minimum of 5p for single use carrier bags as of Monday 5th October.

Which shops will chardge for bags

Large businesses will need to charge for single-use plastic carrier bags. This applies to retailers who have 250 or more employees. Smaller businesses can also charge on a voluntary basis if they wish.

Bags for life

As a shopper, you can avoid being charged by bringing your own bags or containers. In some shops, you will be able to buy thicker, reusable ‘bags for life’. Typically, you pay for these once, and can return them for a free replacement when they wear out.

When you won’t be charged for a bag

There are some cases where you won’t be charged for a bag:

  • paper bags
  • shops in airports, or on board trains, aeroplanes or ships
  • bags only containing certain items, such as unwrapped food, raw meat and fish where there is a food safety risk, prescription medicines, uncovered blades, seeds, bulbs and flowers, or live fish

Thefts from Vans “Be Aware”

There has been a spate of thefts from vans overnight on Thursday 24th/Friday 25th September across Burslem, Tunstall & Sandyford areas.

Numerous tools have been stolen in the incidents which occurred in Leigh Street, Hamil Road, Lawton Street, Sandy Road, Wignall Road, Irene Avenue and Sunnyside Avenue.

Please warn neighbours to be on their guard and to make sure their vehicles, especially vans, are parked as securely as possible at all times.

It is also advisable, where possible, to empty vehicles of all valuables before leaving them unattended.

If anyone has information on the criminal activity, then please contact Staffordshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Mobile Society Closes Police Station

Tunstall Police Station to close

Inspector Richard Simpson reported at the Sandyford & Goldenhill Residents Public Meeting on Thursday that Tunstall Police Station will be closing in either October or November, and the police will be working out of Sandyford Fire Station instead, which means residents will be able to visit local police at the fire station.

Sandyford Fire Station, new home for Tunstall Police

After being asked by residents of opening times for police access at the fire station, the Inspector said 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. but believes if pre-arranged, people could be seen out of hours.

Inspector Richard Simpson said, today we are a more mobile society, do we need a police station in the middle of a community, he went onto say, a police officer can visit an incident, the person does not need to go to a building, and in today’s society we have mobile devices that can deal with issues.
